    Margate History

    The City of Margate is a component of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach MSA and is situated in the county of Broward. Margate is the 14th-largest city in Broward County with a population of 59,116 (Bureau of Economic and Business Research, 2019 Estimates). 


    Margate is made up of 30 miles of canals and nine square miles of streets dotted with trees. The distance between the City of Margate and the Atlantic Ocean is only 7.5 miles, and it takes 20 minutes to go there from Port Everglades and the Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood International Airport.


    In 1955, the Town of Margate became the municipal organization that would become the City of Margate. The Town of Margate was officially established as a City in 1961. Since it was regarded as a "gateway" to western Broward County, "Margate" is supposed to have obtained its name from the first three letters of the founder's last name, Jack Marqusee, and the first four letters of gateway.


    Margate is well regarded for providing top-notch municipal services and having an extraordinary sense of community. The City offers a variety of services, such as emergency medical and fire protection, water and wastewater treatment, stormwater management, recreation, roadway improvements, planning and zoning, and general administrative support.


    Margate was recognized as one of Florida's top 50 safest cities by the National Council for Home Safety and Security in 2019 and was listed as the 37th best city to launch a small business. 


    In order to achieve long-term economic growth, the City is working to draw new companies, encourage the expansion of current companies, offer first-rate recreational and cultural activities, and promote the city as a desirable place to live, work, shop, and have fun. The Northwest Focal Point Senior Center (Senior Center) and the Community Redevelopment Agency are two blended component entities for which the City is financially liable (CRA).
