Lauderdale-By-The-Sea History

The Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is a 1.5 square mile town located in Broward County, Florida, on Florida's "Gold Coast." The Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Intracoastal Waterway to the west border the whole Town. 

Both the City of Pompano Beach and the City of Fort Lauderdale border it on the north and the south, respectively. The Town is situated 7 feet above sea level on a barrier island. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is located 33 miles from Palm Beach and 30 miles from Miami.

The 1920s are when Lauderdale-By-The-Sea first emerged. The land that would become Lauderdale-By-The-Sea was acquired by Boston businessman and developer William F. Morang in February 1924 from Henry S. Moody and John C. Gregory. A few years later, Melvin I. Anglin, a South Florida developer and real estate mogul from Gary, Indiana, purchased the property with plans to create a brand-new coastal neighborhood. Later, Anglin was elected as the town's first mayor.

On November 30, 1927, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea became established for the first time; however, the state withdrew its charter in 1933. The Town reincorporated in 1949, 14 years later. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea set strict height restrictions on buildings in 1973 and continues to do so today in an effort to preserve its small-town charm and ocean vistas, whereas many other Florida coastal communities have permitted the construction of enormous condominium complexes right on the beach. 

The Town has grown significantly during the last 40 years. In 1960, there were 1,300 people living in the Town. In October 2001, when Lauderdale-By-The-Sea effectively annexed the Intracoastal Beach Area, a coastal community immediately north of the Town, the number of permanent inhabitants living here more than doubled. The Town now has 6,056 permanent residents.
