The stronghold constructed on the banks of the New River during the Second Seminole War bears the name of the city of Fort Lauderdale. In order to seize Seminole agricultural areas and engage the elusive Indian warriors, Major William Lauderdale led a detachment of Tennessee Volunteers south down the east coast of Florida that year. There would be three forts built in his honor, the first at the fork of the New River, the second at Tarpon Bend, and the biggest on the shore where Bahia Mar would be built. Today, none of the forts remain. The biggest of Broward County's 31 municipalities and one of the ten largest in the country, Fort Lauderdale was founded on March 27, 1911, spans over 36 square miles, and has an estimated population of 186,220.
